Maternal Lineage Test

Maternal Lineage Test
Females, as well as males, can discover their ancient maternal lineage through DNA testing. Because a father's mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is destroyed at fertilization, a child inherits only the mother's mitochondrial DNA, thus preserving the maternal link to the ancient past. Due to this unique inheritance pattern, both males and females may directly contribute a DNA sample for testing the maternal lineage.
Humans began to diversify as they migrated out of Africa and populated the rest of the world adapting to new climates, diets, and living conditions. Over tens of thousands of years, these ancient populations became isolated and their DNA changed until they became genetically distinct from one another. These deep ancestral groupings are referred to today as Haplogroups. Through DNA testing, we can track the branching of haplogroups and their subgroups from the original African home and thus discover interesting facts about our own ancient ancestors movements across time and geography.
About Maternal Lineage Test Results
Maternal Lineage tests are derived from mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) which is passed from a mother to her male and female children. Thus mtDNA is a powerful investigative tool for researching the maternal line and identifying one's maternal ancient ancestry.
Maternal lineage testing sequences portions of the mtDNA known as hypervariable regions (HVR). Two mtDNA segments, known as Hypervariable Regions 1 and 2 (HVR 1 & 2) are of great interest. Your sequences are then compared to the revised Cambridge Reference Sequence (rCRS). The rCRS is the reference standard against which all mtDNA sequences are compared..Your results are displayed in a table that shows the location in the sequence, the reference nucleotide, and how your results differ. The number and type of differences your mtDNA has from the standard is what Ancestry.com DNA uses to determine your Maternal Ancient Ancestry or haplogroup.
Applications of mtDNA Testing
The two most popular applications of mtDNA testing is: to reveal common maternal line ancestry and to explore one's ancient ancestral origins.
Maternal Line Ancestry - The greatest genealogical value of your individual sequence results is in excluding persons from your maternal line.
Maternal Ancient Ancestry - Your maternal ancient ancestry traces the migration of your fore bearers out of the African continent where they split from other groups to populate the different regions of the world. Over thousands of years, these ancient groups diversified into genetically distinct haplogroups.
